Melasma

Struggling with melasma caused by sun exposure or hormonal changes? PicoWay’s gentle, heat-free technology fades stubborn dark patches safely and effectively. Unlike traditional lasers that generate excess heat (which can make melasma worse), PicoWay’s ultra-short pulses break down pigment particles without irritating the skin.

PicoWay uses ultra-short laser pulses to break up excess pigment in the skin without generating excess heat. This reduces the risk of worsening melasma, which can sometimes happen with traditional lasers that use heat-based technology.

Yes! PicoWay is one of the safest laser treatments for melasma, even for darker skin tones, because it targets pigment with photoacoustic energy rather than heat, minimizing the risk of hyperpigmentation or skin irritation.

Melasma often requires multiple sessions for the best results. Most patients see improvement after 2–3 treatments, but depending on the severity, 3–5 sessions may be recommended.

Melasma is a chronic condition, meaning it can return with sun exposure, hormonal changes, or heat exposure. However, with proper maintenance—like daily SPF use, medical-grade skincare, and periodic touch-ups—results can be long-lasting.

Before Treatment:

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least two weeks before your session.
Stay well-hydrated to support your skin’s healing process.
Discontinue harsh skincare products (like retinoids or exfoliants) 3–5 days before treatment.

After Treatment:

Apply a medical-grade hydrating cream to support skin recovery.
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily (melasma is highly triggered by UV exposure).
Avoid heat-based treatments (saunas, hot yoga, and steam rooms) for at least one week.
Drink plenty of water to support the lymphatic system in clearing pigment.
Avoid retinoids and exfoliants for about 5–7 days or until any redness subsides.

There is no permanent cure for melasma, but PicoWay significantly reduces pigmentation and helps keep it under control. Long-term management with SPF, skincare, and maintenance treatments is key to preventing melasma from returning.

Yes! Many people see the best results when PicoWay is combined with medical-grade skincare, chemical peels, or prescription topicals like hydroquinone or tranexamic acid. Your provider can recommend the best combination for you.

At our clinic we recommend patients to use hydroquinone by ZO Skin Health by Dr. Obagi. Our medical aestheticians can analyze your skin and decide if this will be a good add on to your skin routine.

Remember that there is no one size fit all treatment when it comes to melasma.

You may need to avoid PicoWay if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have an active skin infection in the treatment area
Have recently used Accutane (within the last 6 months)
Have excessive recent sun exposure or a tan
