IV Iron Infusion Therapy in Mississauga
Restore your energy. Feel like yourself again.
If you’ve been struggling with low iron and oral supplements haven’t helped, you’re not alone. Many women and men deal with iron deficiency for months—or even years—before finding relief.
At Health Globe Wellness Clinic in Mississauga, our team offers IV iron infusions to help you replenish your iron stores quickly and safely—so you can get back to feeling energized, focused, and strong.
Why Choose IV Iron Therapy?
Iron plays a key role in your energy levels, brain function, and metabolism. When your levels are low, your body has to work much harder to keep up—leaving you exhausted, foggy-headed, or short of breath.
IV iron therapy helps restore balance by delivering iron directly into your bloodstream. This allows for:
- Better absorption – bypasses digestion, ideal for those who can’t tolerate or absorb oral iron
- Faster results – noticeable improvement in energy within days
- Convenience – often completed in just one or two visits
- Insurance-friendly – medication prescribed by your NP or MD, usually covered under your drug plan
How It Works at Health Globe
- Assessment & Delegation
- IV iron is performed by our naturopathic doctors (NDs) under delegation from our nurse practitioners (NPs).
- Patients can either have their Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) send us a delegation form or book an initial consult with our NP.
- Prescription & Coverage
- Your NP or MD sends the iron prescription directly to your pharmacy so your insurance can cover the cost.
- The infusion procedure can often be claimed under naturopathic services.
- Your Infusion Session
- The treatment usually takes 90-120 minutes, including a brief monitoring period afterward.
- You can relax, read, or listen to music during your session. Most patients drive themselves home afterward.
- Follow-Up Care
- Bloodwork (ferritin, hemoglobin, iron panel) is repeated 4–6 weeks after treatment to ensure your levels are fully restored.
Safety and Experience You Can Trust
At Health Globe Wellness Clinic, your safety comes first. Every infusion is administered by trained professionals in a calm and supportive environment. We use Health Canada–approved Venofer (iron sucrose) and Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose)
Our practitioners carefully assess each patient and adjust dosage and infusion rate to minimize risk. Reactions are rare and typically mild (flushing, headache, or temporary fatigue). You’ll be closely monitored throughout your visit.
FAQ
What is an IV iron infusion?
An IV iron infusion is a treatment that delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a small IV line. This method bypasses digestion, allowing for faster and more effective absorption—especially helpful if oral iron pills haven’t worked or cause side effects.
Who Benefits Most from IV Iron?
You may be a good candidate if you experience:
- Fatigue or low energy
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Iron deficiency during pregnancy (2nd or 3rd trimester)
- Intolerance to oral iron (GI upset, constipation, etc.)
- Malabsorption (celiac disease, IBD, bariatric surgery)
- Chronic fatigue, brain fog, or restless legs
Is IV iron infusion covered by insurance or OHIP?
OHIP only covers IV iron infusions when they are performed in a hospital or publicly funded medical setting by a physician. At Health Globe Wellness Clinic, infusions are administered by our naturopathic doctors under nurse practitioner delegation in a private clinic, which falls outside of OHIP coverage.
Are there ferritin requirements for OHIP coverage?
Yes. OHIP typically covers IV iron infusions only for patients with severe iron deficiency, usually indicated by a ferritin level below 11 µg/L. This is much lower than the general guideline of ferritin under 30 µg/L used elsewhere. Patients with ferritin levels above 11 µg/L usually do not qualify for OHIP coverage.
Will private insurance cover IV iron?
Most private or workplace insurance plans cover the iron medication (Venofer or Monoferric) itself when prescribed by a nurse practitioner or medical doctor, as it is dispensed through your pharmacy. Some plans may also partially reimburse the infusion procedure under naturopathic services. Some extended health plans have nursing services that cover the initial visit with nurse practitioners as well
Why choose a private clinic like Health Globe Wellness?
Receiving IV iron in a private clinic allows patients to access treatment faster, in a calm and personalized environment, avoiding long wait times often seen in hospital settings.
How soon will I feel better?
Most patients maintain healthy iron levels for several months to a year, depending on diet, menstrual losses, and underlying conditions. Your practitioner will recommend when to repeat blood work or schedule follow-up treatments if needed.
How long do the results last?
IV iron is administered by our naturopathic doctors under medical delegation from our nurse practitioners.
Do I need a referral?
Not necessarily. If your MD or NP provides delegation, we can proceed directly. Otherwise, we offer a short NP consultation to assess and delegate treatment.
Can my doctor send a referral or prescription directly to you?
Absolutely. Your MD or NP can fax a delegation form and prescription to our clinic, or we can arrange an initial consultation with our nurse practitioner to complete this process for you.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your lab results, symptoms, and the type of iron product used. Some patients only need one Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose) infusion, which delivers up to 1000 mg of iron in a single visit. Others may require multiple smaller Venofer (iron sucrose) infusions, typically 200 mg per session, spaced over several weeks. Your practitioner will review your lab work and help determine the best and most cost-effective approach for you.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Yes, IV iron is considered safe in the second and third trimesters. We’ll review your options and ensure informed consent before proceeding.
Are there any risks?
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild. Severe reactions (such as anaphylaxis) are extremely rare.
What should I do before my appointment?
Eat a light meal and drink plenty of water before your infusion. Wear comfortable clothing and let your provider know if you have any allergies, infections, or recent changes in medication.
What should I expect after my infusion?
You might feel a bit tired for the first 12–24 hours. Mild muscle aches or headaches can happen but usually pass quickly. If you notice swelling, pain, or darkening at the IV site, contact the clinic. Serious reactions are extremely rare.
